A student team supervised by Prof. Jack CHENG, Associate Head and Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL), won the final award in the Student Research Category of buildingSMART International openBIM Awards 2024, which is the most globally recognized award in openBIM.

The team comprised Civil Engineering PhD students XU Yuqing, GONG Xingbo and WU Zhaoji, and PhD graduate Helen Hoi-Ling KWOK. Their winning entry is titled “CarbonSmart: Automated Knowledge Graph-based Carbon Assessment and Tracking throughout the Construction Life Cycle using openBIM, openGIS, and Blockchain”.

The award was presented at the banquet of the buildingSMART International Summit cum CIB W78 Conference held in Marrakech, Morocco in October 2024. A total of 164 projects from around the world applied for the award. 22 shortlisted projects participated in the on-site defense, and international judges scored them on the spot and selected the winners in each category (only 1 Winner in each category). This year also marked a record-breaking result for Hong Kong, with five finalists (the world’s top three in a category), and three final award winners (HKUST, Hip Hing Engineering Company Limited, and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government).

Congratulations to all team members and Prof. Jack C.P. Cheng for their excellent work!
