Prof. Dan Tsang Elected Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers
Ir Prof. Dan Tsang from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST has been elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The fellowship recognizes Prof. Tsang’s distinguished contribution to advancing carbon neutrality and green construction, particularly through his pioneering research on biochar-enhanced concrete, resource circularity and sustainable waste valorization, as well as for his leadership in developing innovative engineering solutions for low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Prof. Tsang joins this prestigious community of engineering leaders whose work has shaped the profession and made lasting global impact.
A trailblazer in environmental engineering and sustainability, Prof. Tsang has over two decades of research and professional experience. With more than 650 publications in leading international journals, over 75,000 citations, and an h-index of 151, he has been recognized among Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists (lifetime) and Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers in both the engineering and the environment and ecology categories. He also holds fellowships from the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE). In addition, with a strong commitment to advancing the engineering profession and contributing to public service, Prof. Tsang serves as the founding editor-in-chief of npj Materials Sustainability (Nature Portfolio), as well as chairman of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association (2023–2025) and the Waste Management Subcommittee (2023 & 2024) of the Advisory Council on the Environment of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
