CIVL Professors–Led Research Team Prepares to Launch Multispectral Optical Satellite

A research team from HKUST, led by Prof. SU Hui and Prof. ZHANG Limin of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is set to launch a multispectral optical satellite at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu province this Friday (August 25). The team has been working with the Chang Guang Satellite Technology Company Ltd. to develop high-resolution optical satellites and key technologies for monitoring carbon emissions.

The satellite, known as “HKUST-FYBB#1”, will use remote sensing to monitor and collect data on the world’s natural and urban environment, sustainable development, as well as on natural disasters that take place across the globe. This will be tremendously important for facilitating macro-level decision-making in such areas as energy conservation and emission reduction, ultimately contributing to achieving China’s national dual carbon goals.
