Prof. Jack Cheng and Team Win Top Award at HKIBIM Award 2025
Prof. Jack C. P. CHENG, Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of HKUST, and his research team have received a Grand Award at HKIBIM Award 2025. Won for the BIM academic/training/research institute category, the award was presented on 17 April 2026 at the HKIBIM Award 2025 Award Presentation Ceremony.
In close collaboration with HKUST’s Campus Management and Campus Development Offices, Prof. Cheng and his team have for a number of years been developing a campus-wide digital twin — a virtual model and platform that integrates real-time data from sensors, building systems and environmental monitoring. An integral part of HKUST’s Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab (SSC) initiative, the current award-winning digital twin builds on two earlier phases (2019 and 2021) and continues to be enhanced by Prof. Cheng’s research team, with newer, smarter technologies such as autonomous robots and AI-powered chatbots introduced periodically to the platform. Through automating routines and tasks, bolstering resource management, providing actionable insights as well as improving decision-making, the ever-upgrading platform facilitates an ever-more robust, efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly UST campus. The Grand Award that it garners well attests to its tremendous importance in HKUST’s continued leadership in smart building technology research.
The HKIBIM Award, established by the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM), promotes using digital innovation to transform the construction industry in order to create smarter and more connected built environments. Heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Jack Cheng and his research team for their outstanding work!
