PROF. JACK CHENG AND CIVL POSTDOCS WIN ONE GOLD AND ONE SILVER MEDAL AT INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF INVENTIONS OF GENEVA
As the Director of the HKUST BIM Lab, Prof. Jack CHENG and his research team have won a Gold medal and a Silver medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva (IEIG)!
The team won a Gold medal with an innovative technology called “A Domain Knowledge-enhanced Generative AI based on Large Visual-Language Models for High-level Construction Site Safety Monitoring”, which embeds multi-modal construction safety knowledge into a large language model, becoming an intelligent virtual assistant in a Smart Site Safety System for predictive safety monitoring. The engine possesses natural language processing capability and environmental awareness beyond traditional AI, identifying unsafe hazards/behaviors not recognizable by existing construction monitoring systems. The team led by Prof. Jack CHENG involves Dr. Peter Kok Yiu WONG (Postdoc), Mr. Jeff Chak Fu CHAN (MPhil candidate) and Mr. Issac Pak Him LEUNG (a CIVL alumni and co-founded a startup AutoSafe Ltd. with Prof. Cheng), collaborating with the Drainage Services Department of HKSAR Government.
The team also won a Silver medal with another technology called “Digital Twin, AI, Robotics, and IoT Empowered ESG Platform for Property and Facility Management Industries”, a Digital Twin-based robot-assisted surveillance platform to support ESG reporting and environmental management based on novel robot localization, digital twin integration and AI-based spatial-temporal analytics technologies. The platform provides continuous robot-based indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring with alerts and analytics to reduce manpower requirements, suggestions for building operation actions with reference to alerts triggered and trends and patterns identified based on analytics for healthier and more sustainable built environment. The team led by Prof. Jack CHENG involves Dr. Helen Hoi Ling KWOK (Postdoc), Mr. Xiao ZHANG (PhD candidate) and Mr. Cong HUANG (PhD candidate), collaborating with Modern Proptech Ltd. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Modern Living Investments Holdings Ltd.) and the Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM).
The 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is being held from April 17 to 21 in Switzerland, with 1,000+ inventions from international universities and companies among 40+ countries/regions. A total of 365 inventions from Hong Kong have participated in the show this year.
Big congratulations to Prof. Jack CHENG and his team under the HKUST BIM Lab!
