Prof. Su and Co-authors Receive AMS Banner I. Miller Award

Prof. Hui SU, Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received along with her co-authors the Banner I. Miller Award from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for a paper entitled “Applying Satellite Observations of Tropical Cyclone Internal Structures to Rapid Intensification Forecast with Machine Learning” (Su et al., 2020). The AMS commends the authors for their “significant contributions advancing the understanding of rapid intensification of tropical cyclones and paving the way towards the use of machine learning in operational forecasting.”

The Banner I. Miller Award, presented every two years, is “given for an outstanding contribution to the science of hurricane and tropical weather forecasting published in a journal with international circulation.” Prof. Su’s co-awardees are Longtao Wu, Jonathan H. Jiang, Raksha Pai, Alex Liu, Albert J. Zhai, Peyman Tavallali, and Mark DeMaria. The Award will be presented to them during AMS’s 104th Annual Meeting, held between 28 January and 1 February, 2024 in Baltimore, U.S.
