HKUST Student Chapter Wins First Prize in ASCE Symposium Paper Competition
The HKUST ASCE Student Chapter was awarded first prize in the paper competition at the First ASCE Greater China Student Symposium, hosted by the Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin, China, on 6–7 May, 2023.
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is the oldest national professional association of engineers in the United States. Today, ASCE has more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. The ASCE Greater China section is one of ASCE’s 18 international sections, and the ASCE Student Chapter at HKUST, founded in 2001, is the first to be formed outside North America.
This year, the ASCE Greater China Student Symposium brought together the student chapters from twelve prestigious universities — Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Southeast University, Hohai University, Chongqing University, Southwest Jiaotong University, China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing University of Civil Engineering & Architecture, and last but not least, HKUST. The student symposium serves as a platform for ASCE student chapters to interact with each other and to promote their activities. The paper competition, in particular, provided an excellent opportunity for the students to not only stay abreast of contemporary issues but also develop their ability to communicate and present ideas effectively.
The HKUST team’s paper presented a comprehensive review of the engineering challenges faced by Hong Kong under climate change, and discussed possible technical solutions. The team’s triumph in the competition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its members.
The cabinet members of HKUST ASCE Chapter are Olivia LAM Hau Yee (President), Hayden YEUNG (Internal Vice President), Haruka LEE (External Vice President), LI Sau Long (Secretary), WU Qiujuan (Treasurer), Jessie LEUNG Kwan Yui (IT Secretary). The faculty advisor is Prof. Gang WANG.
