CIVL UG Students Win Second Place at ICE Model Building Competition 2025
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is very pleased to announce that our student team—the Clear Water Bay Blocks Team—came first runner-up in the Institution of Civil Engineers Hong Kong Association (ICE HKA) Graduates and Students Division (G&S) Model Building Competition 2025, held on March 29 and 30, 2025 at HKUST. This team-based competition for undergraduate civil engineering students challenges them to apply their knowledge, engineering skills, as well as ingenuity and creativity in designing and constructing structural models.
This year’s theme was to design “coastal defence structures against wave load”, and the participants had to devise a model of a breakwater or seawall within a limited amount of time using only materials (e.g., concrete, styrofoam, plywood, etc.) supplied to them. The models then underwent wave load tests in the University’s Water Resources Laboratory. The competition not only provided valuable hands-on experience for the participants, but also gave them a chance to hone their skills (including management and problem solving skills) and reinforce their awareness of environmental issues.
The first-runner up team from HKUST comprised HUANG Chung Kan, ZHANG Hau King, WONG Hoi Chung, WANG Man Wang, HUANG Kailin and HO Hinci. Congratulations to them for their wonderful performance and result!
