Prof. Charles W. W. Ng received the 2015 State Scientific Technological Advancement Award (Second Class)
Professor Charles W.W. Ng and his colleagues from Tianjin University and other four construction companies received the 2015 State Scientific Technological Advancement Award (Second Class) from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The title of their winning project is “Novel supporting technologies and their applications on the safe and economical construction of long, large and extra deep excavations”. This Award is given to them for their new scientific and technological contributions in three major advancements:
(i) technological development of scientific methods for safe excavation of long and extra deep excavations;
(ii) multi-stage retaining technology for constructing large and extra deep excavations without propping and
(iii) groundwater pumping and recharging circulation system for constructing excavations in coastal areas.
One of Professor Ng’s key contributions to this project has also been recognized by the National Research Council, Canada for their paper entitled “Excavation effects on pile behaviour and capacity”, which received the R M Quigley Award for the best paper published in the internationally reputable Canadian Geotechnical Journal in 2012. This is the only award received by researchers from the Greater China region since the establishment of the Journal more than 50 years ago.
