Prof. Ben CHAN Honored with 2024 UGC Teaching Award in Collaborative Teams Category

Prof. Ben CHAN Yui-Bun, Associate Dean of Students and Associate Director of Center for Engineering Education Innovation at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), received the prestigious 2024 University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award in the Collaborative Teams category.

Prof. Chan is a member of the cross-institutional Holistic Competency and Virtues Education (HAVE) Team, which aims to cultivate lifelong learning competencies in students beyond their academic disciplines to help them navigate life’s challenges.

The team is led by Prof. Cecilia CHAN Ka-Yuk (Professor, Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre; Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong (HKU)). In addition to Prof. Ben Chan, other team members are Prof. Albert KO Wing-Yin (Director of Service-Learning, Lingnan University), Dr. Theresa KWONG Fuk-Ning (Director, Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning, Hong Kong Baptist University) and Prof. Samson TSE Shu-Ki (Dean of Student Affairs, HKU).

A key driver of engineering education innovation at HKUST, Prof. Ben Chan focuses on technology-based teaching pedagogies, cornerstone design, creativity and innovativeness development, engineering identity development and internationalization. He has been recognized by multiple teaching excellence awards at the University and School levels. Over the years, he has played a significant role in developing several major teaching and learning initiatives in the School of Engineering, including the Undergraduate Student-initiated Experiential Learning (USEL) Program, Peer Mentoring and Academic Advising Program, First Year Cornerstone Engineering Design Project, and the Academy for Bright Future Young Engineers.

The annual UGC Teaching Award honors academics from the UGC-funded universities for their outstanding teaching performance and achievements, as well as their leadership in and scholarly contribution to teaching and learning within and across universities. The award has three categories: General Faculty Members, Early Career Faculty Members, and Collaborative Teams. Recipients were selected through a rigorous process from over 20 outstanding nominees.
