Prof Anthony Leung Receives Two Prestigious Awards: NSFC-EYS (“优青”) and ISSMGE Bright Spark Award

Prof. Anthony Leung has been named a 2019 Excellent Young Scholar (EYS, “优青” — 优秀青年科学基金项目) by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, 国家自然科学基金委员会). He has also won the Bright Spark Award from the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).

The EYS is one of the most prestigious awards for young scientists (under 38 for male and under 40 for female) in China. For the award, Prof Leung has received a funding of RMB 1.3 million from the NSFC for his pioneering research on the hydromechanical behaviour of unsaturated rooted soil. The EYS award recognizes research excellence and significance, and aims to foster EYS scholars’ research, helping them to become world leaders in their respective fields. This is the first time that the NSFC has opened the EYS award to scholars from Hong Kong and Macau.

The ISSMGE is the pre-eminent global professional body in geotechnical engineering. The Bright Spark Award promotes young members (under the age of 36) of the ISSMGE, encouraging and supporting them to play a major role, especially to have the opportunity to deliver keynote lectures, in not only regional but international conferences. On October 17, 2019, at the 16th Asian Regional Conference (16ARC) of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Taipei, Prof. Leung received the award and delivered a keynote lecture on the topic “(the) Role of vegetation on soil responses”.

Congratulations to Prof. Leung for these milestones and much-deserved recognitions!
