CIVL Students Receive Awards in the Hong Kong openBIM/openGIS Award 2022

Three teams of students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, supervised by Prof. Jack Cheng, have received top awards in the Hong Kong openBIM/openGIS Award 2022. The award was organized by the Hong Kong Alliance of Built Asset and Environment Information Management Associations (HKABAEIMA) and the Hong Kong Chapter of buildingSMART International. The said HKUST teams won the top three awards — two Grand Awards and one Merit Award — in the Research Category of the competition.

The Hong Kong openBIM/openGIS Award aims to recognize best practices and innovations of openBIM and openGIS applications in project delivery and/or lifecycle asset management in the built asset industry in Hong Kong. The award is supported by 50 organizations from government bureaus and departments to professional and academic institutions, with judging panels made up of renowned local and global experts. Individual awards are categorized into the Project Category and Research Category. In 2022, the Research Category received submissions from top universities including HKU, PolyU, CityU, Tsinghua University, National University of Singapore, and, last but certainly not least, HKUST.

There were two Grand Awards given in the Research Category in 2022, both of which were captured by HKUST students: one of the awards was won by a team working on “Secure openCDE with Blockchain for HKUST Digital Twin with openBIM and openGIS Applications”. That team consisted of Dr. Moumita Das, Mr. Peter Kok-Yiu Wong, Mr. Cong Huang, Mr. Parson Kwok Ho Poon, and Mr. Zhaoji Wu. The other Grand Award was won by a team that worked on “openBIM-based Design Optimization and Prefabrication Automation of Steel Reinforcement”, comprising Dr. Vincent Gan, Ms. Yuhan Liu, Mr. Billy Wong, Mr. Mingkai Li, and Ms. Stephanie Lao. The Merit Award was won by a team comprising Mr. Changhao Song and Mr. Zhengyi Chen, and their topic was “Motion Simulation and Monitoring of Mobile Construction Robots based on OpenBIM and Physics Engine”.

Our heartfelt congratulations to all the teams for their outstanding achievements!
