CIVL PhD Graduate Wins Structural Excellence Award

Dr. Anastasios Giouvanidis, Civil Engineering alumni who was supervised by Prof. Ilias Dimitrakopoulos, will be awarded with the Structural Excellence Award 2019 given by the Structural Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Dr. Giouvanidis obtained his PhD in May 2018. His research, falling within earthquake engineering and structural dynamics, focuses on the rocking isolation of structures. His paper entitled "Rocking amplification and strong motion duration" was published in the journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics, and reveals, among other things, that the time intervals during which ground motion is capable of triggering rocking motion have a dominant importance on rocking amplification. This paper will be presented at the annual general meeting of the Structural Division of HKIE, on May 3, 2019.
