CIVL PhD Alumni Receives John Carter Award

Dr. Huanran WU, who graduated in 2018 with a PhD from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Jidong Zhao, has received the prestigious John Carter Award from the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG).


The award, given every three years, recognizes a junior researcher who is still within the first five years of earning his/her PhD degree and has made a significant contribution to the field of Geomechanics through publishing his/her work in refereed journals. The award was announced at the 16th International Conference of IACMAG in Torino, Italy, held from August 30 to September 2, 2022.

After obtaining his PhD, Dr. Wu continued to work with Prof. Zhao for a year and a half as a postdoctoral fellow, before joining Chongqing University as a faculty member. He has previously won the 2018 Ringo Yu Prize for Best PhD Thesis in Geotechnical Studies, awarded by the HKIE Geotechnical Division.
