CIVL Grad Students Win Best Presentation Awards

Ms. Renee Vizmanos and Mr. Changyi Yang, both PhD students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering supervised by Prof. Jidong Zhao, have each won a Best Student Presentation Award at the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (HKSTAM) 2023 Conference. HKSTAM, which was founded in 1996, is a member of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). It promotes both the science and application of mechanics, as well as facilitates collaborations between researchers in Hong Kong and in the international community. The HKSTAM Conference 2023 was held on 15 April at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The title of Renee’s presentation was “Numerical simulation of coastal breakwater using signed distance field-based fully resolved coupled CFD-DEM”, while Changyi’s was “Numerical simulation of fluid-solid interactions by Peridynamics”. Renee joined the Computational Granular Mechanics Lab (directed by Prof. Zhao) in 2021, with Changyi joining in the following year. Both are recipients of the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship.
