HKUST Student Team Wins Gold Award at Global AI Challenge Competition

A student team comprising Mr. Muhammad Akber and Muhammad Waqar, both PhD students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Mr. Murad Abdullah and Syed Awais Wahab Shah, PhD students of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has received a gold award (academic group) in the Global AI Challenge for Building E&M Facilities. The award ceremony will be held during the third quarter of 2022.

Co-organized by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the HKSAR, the competition hopes to allow more scholars to understand the potential and application of AI technologies in building energy conservation and challenges facing any large-scale deployment of AI, and, as much as it provides a valuable opportunity for researchers, innovators and industry leaders to exchange ideas, the competition also aims to release a unique dataset on building operations, thereby making it possible for a wide range of scholars to participate in the research and development of smart building technologies and in introducing semantic AI platforms to smart buildings.

The HKUST team’s project developed a data-driven machine learning model capable of predicting the AC cooling load of commercial buildings. The project was not only evaluated on the model’s design and innovation but also on resources used, overall presentation of the project, data analytics solution and how it applies to semantic AI. The HKUST team was among a select group of gold-award recipients out of 120 entries in the competition.
