The Structural Engineering Laboratory provides comprehensive modern facilities for research and teaching in structural engineering, solid mechanics and construction materials. Within the 1300 m² of floor area are Structures/Solid Mechanics Laboratory and Concrete/Construction Materials Laboratory. A comprehensive range of modern testing machines is provided for static and dynamic testing of structures and construction materials. These include a 2500 kN multi-channel DARTEC testing system, a 2000 kN tension/compression machine of generous light-clearance, MTS machines and three electro-magnetic and hydraulic vibration testing systems, with various modern data acquisition systems. There is a strong reaction wall of six meters high in the Structures/Solid Mechanics Laboratory for large-scale static and dynamic testing of structures. Workshop facilities are also provided by the Department's own electronic and machine shops.
