Postgraduate Programs

Postgraduate Programs

The postgraduate programs offered by our department aim at training students to solve problems in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering by enlarging and deepening their knowledge base as well as encouraging the intellectual pursuit of creative ideas to improve human and natural environments.

Research Postgraduate Programs

The postgraduate programs lead to the degree of Master of Science (MSc), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering (CIVL); Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Engineering (EVNG),

(i) Civil Engineering

The in-progress and planned projects in Hong Kong for airport construction, port facility expansion, improved road systems, pollution control, and urban re-development demand the work of large teams of Civil and Structural engineers in the next decade. As the practice of civil and structural engineering itself develops rapidly, the leaders of these teams are likely to be those who have broad-based and in-depth knowledge of the discipline as well as a good grasp of new design concepts and technologies. Postgraduate training develops such potentials and offers excellent opportunities for students who wish to become future leaders in this profession.

The MPhil (CIVL) program focuses on strengthening students' knowledge in certain areas of Civil Engineering and exposing them to the issues involved in the conception, design, construction, maintenance, and use of structures and facilities. A candidate for an MPhil degree is expected to demonstrate knowledge in the discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making a contribution to the field.

The PhD (CIVL) program aims at developing the skills needed to identify issues related to Civil Engineering and the ability to formulate and propose solutions to a problem in an independent manner. A candidate for a PhD degree is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline.

Research foci of the CIVL programs range from Construction Management, Environmental, Geotechnical, Hydraulics, Material and Structural Engineering as well as Transportation areas.

(ii) Environmental Engineering

There is growing concern for environmental conservation and sustainable development across the globe. To achieve long-term environmental sustainability, it requires innovative solutions to many problems caused by human to the aquatic, atmospheric and land environments – problems ranging from micropollutants in drinking water, noxious aerosols and fumes in air, to heavy metals and toxic organics in solid wastes that will overwhelm our landfills. The scarcity of water resources, the ever-deteriorating air quality in many metropolises, the threat of mounting volumes of waste without suitable disposal sites, and a long list of other critical issues must be resolved through the innovations of scientists and engineers.

Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary issues including the physical process of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modeling, data acquisition and measurement, to name but a few. The Environmental Engineering (EVNG) Program is one of the most successful interdisciplinary research programs in this field of study. The EVNG Program covers a comprehensive curriculum that provides a solid foundation on which students may work on research studies.

The MPhil (EVNG) program focuses on strengthening students’ knowledge of environmental engineering and to expose them to issues in environmental pollution and conservation, and sustainable development. A candidate for an MPhil degree is expected to demonstrate knowledge in the discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making a contribution to the field.

The PhD (EVNG) program aims at developing and strengthening students’ skills in identifying key issues related to environmental engineering, in formulating original research plans and methodologies, and in implementing those plans and methodologies to produce results that are useful for reducing environmental pollution and advancing environmental conservation and sustainable development. A candidate for a PhD degree is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline.

The EVNG programs focuses on innovative technologies for different applications in the environmental engineering area and seeks to provide research students with an understanding of effective environmental management strategies. The main research areas includes Innovative Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies, Solid/ Hazardous Waste Management and Waste Recycling/ Reuse, Contaminated Land and Groundwater Remediation, Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality, Environmental Sustainability and Renewable Energy.

Taught Postgraduate Programs

In addition to the above programs, the Department also participates in the Postgraduate Diploma / Master of Science (MSc) in Civil Infrastructural Engineering and Management (CIEM) and the Postgraduate Diploma / Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Engineering and Management (EVEM).

Postgraduate Diploma/ Master of Science in Civil Infrastructural Engineering and Management (CIEM)

The PGD/MSc programs offer advanced civil engineering and management courses for engineering graduates who wish to strengthen their knowledge and prepare for advanced engineering practices with management responsibilities. The programs are designed with flexibility to adapt to students’ specific needs and interests, while at the same time ensuring sufficient breadth. Few restrictions are imposed on students’ course selections. Students have the freedom to define their own areas of concentrations by taking courses from a few selected technical areas, or cover a broad base by taking courses from various areas. This flexibility is valuable as students may have different needs at different stages of their careers.

Postgraduate Diploma / Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and Management (EVEM)

The PGD/MSc programs are designed for those who wish to strengthen their environmental engineering knowledge and to well-prepare themselves for advanced engineering practices with management responsibilities. The programs not only offer advanced environmental engineering and management courses for students but also enable them to take several electives from other related programs.
