Superior Design Wins PG Team Highest Accolades at Earthquake Engineering Competition

CIVL’s PG team took home the biggest awards from Taipei this past weekend at the Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools (IDEERS) competition (抗震盃–地震工程模型國際競賽)!

Led by Prof. J. S. Kuang, CIVL’s PG team, including Srinivas Mogili (team leader), Michele De Filippo, Bence Kato and Hoi Yin Yung, was crowned champions of the Post-graduate Division (研究生組首獎). The team also won the Innovation Award of Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation (隔減震創意獎), and a Best Presentation Award (最佳簡報獎).

IDEERS, jointly organised by the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs, 國家實驗研究院) and the British Council, is a renowned international earthquake engineering competition for engineering students and, since 2001, has attracted teams from all over the world every year including the US, UK, many parts of Asia, and, in particular, seismically-active regions of the world including New Zealand, Guatemala, Japan, Indonesia, and Taiwan itself, to name a few. This year the contest drew more than 100 teams and over 500 participants competing in three (high-school, undergraduate and post-graduate) divisions. CIVL’s PG team has had to overcome some pretty stiff competition (pun intended) to win their awards!

We celebrate with CIVL’s PG team and Prof. Kuang these very well-deserved honours, and also thank them for being such tremendous ambassadors of our department and programme. Their work and endeavours continue to put us on the map and cement our place—for which we express our heartfelt gratitude.

Congratulations!
