Prof GH Chen Bestowed High National Honor
Prof G.H. Chen has been named a recipient of the “National Innovation Pioneer Award” (全國創新爭先獎) and received the award on May 26 in Beijing. The award recognizes excellent achievements by teams and individuals in science and technology from diverse fields—from infrastructure developments, engineering, to advancements in the industries and enterprises, and contributions to the larger society.
The National Innovation Pioneer Award has only recently been approved and established by the Central Government, and will give out medals and certificates every three years. The certificates are awarded to a maximum of 300 scientists. In this inaugural year, Prof Chen was one of 1343 outstanding researchers nominated from across the country and among 254 conferees. He was Hong Kong’s lone recipient.
The National Innovation Pioneer Award has some of the toughest, most stringent criteria as laid out by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) along with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). Award-winning projects and individuals must be of immense contribution, have tremendously well-established foundation and outstanding track record and potential, must showcase razor-sharp skills, and, above all, be motivated by the desire to inspire and benefit humankind.
Prof Chen is a widely decorated researcher and a leader in water management and wastewater treatment technologies. He has invented and/or developed the acclaimed Membrane Enhanced Primary Treatment (MEPT), seawater-based urine phosphorus recovery (SUPR), and Sulphate Reduction, Autotrophic Denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI) processes, and continues to collaborate with both local and global authorities and institutions and lead research and implement projects that use saline water as alternative water resources.
We extend our warmest congratulations, admiration and gratitude to Prof Chen for his many endeavors and achievements!
