Launching the Research Center on Decarbonization Technology

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce the establishment of the Research Center on Decarbonization Technology (RCDT) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Led by renowned environmental engineering expert Prof. Dan TSANG, Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST, the center aims to drive innovation in low-carbon technologies and support the green transformation of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

With a strong foundation in various engineering disciplines — from civil and environmental, through chemical and biological, to computer, mechanical and aerospace engineering — the Center will focus on such cutting-edge fields as biomass utilization, carbon-neutral energy, green infrastructure, artificial intelligence optimization, and circular economy. The Center aims to promote both research and practical applications in these areas, and, through facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations, develop and build innovative systems that encompass technology development, industrial applications, as well as policy research.

Specific research areas of the Center will include functional biochar design, green conversion of biomass waste, multi-scale sustainable engineering, net-zero energy, lifecycle carbon emissions tracking, etc. In addition, over the next five years, the Center aims to build core experimental platforms and pilot projects to facilitate large-scale industrial application of its technologies.

Talent development will also be a priority of the Center as it plans to launch specialized educational programs in decarbonization technologies and net-zero systems. These programs will include classroom teaching, corporate training, and international exchange activities to nurture green technology professionals.

Overall, the Research Center on Decarbonization Technology will actively pursue international collaborations, partner with overseas universities, research institutions, and businesses, as well as participate in global net-zero emission technology alliances. Through such initiatives, the Center will endeavor to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve environmental quality, and promote the development of a green economy in Hong Kong.
