Launching of Prof. Wilson Tang Scholarships/Prizes/Bursaries
In memory of the late Prof. Wilson Tang, Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1996-2002, a Prof Wilson Tang Memorial Fund was set up in 2012 by the Tang’s family and friends to provide scholarships, prizes and bursaries to engineering students on an annual basis. Using the investment return from the Memorial Fund, and matching support from the University, Engineering School and Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, the Prof. Wilson Tang Scholarship/Prizes/Bursary has been launched in the 2013-14 academic year. To honor Prof Tang’s devotion to educating the youth, nurturing talents and promoting intellectual excellence, four different kinds of awards are provided.
- The Professor Wilson Tang Engineering Scholarship is awarded to students of the Engineering School with outstanding academic performance.
- The Professor Wilson Tang Scholarship is given to outstanding first-year Engineering Students who have decided to choose Civil and Environmental Engineering as their major.
- The Professor Wilson Tang Prize is for awarding the highest scoring students in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses on uncertainties, risks and reliability, areas which Prof Tang pioneered and subsequently developed and taught at the department.
- The Professor Wilson Tang Bursary is given to support students with financial needs for their exchange to overseas universities.
In Fall 2013, the Wilson Tang Engineering Scholarships were awarded to two students, from Germany and Korea, while eight other students received the Wilson Tang Scholarship. In January 2014, the Wilson Tang prize for undergraduates was awarded. Winners of the postgraduate Wilson Tang prize and recipients of the Wilson Tang Bursary will be awarded later in the academic year.
