HKUST Civil and Environmental Engineering Community Honored at ICE Hong Kong Fellow Reception 2025
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is proud to highlight the achievements of distinguished alumnus Dr. Johnny Cheuk, who serves as Chairperson of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Hong Kong Association, and faculty member Prof. Dan Tsang, who was formally conferred Fellowship of ICE at the ICE Hong Kong Fellow Reception 2025, held on 16 September at the Hong Kong Club. The evening commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Cheuk, followed by an address by Ir Ricky Lau Chun-kit, JP, ICE Representative for Hong Kong and Permanent Secretary for Development (Works).
Dr. Cheuk, who earned his BEng and MPhil in Civil Engineering from HKUST before completing his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, currently serves as Senior Vice President and Hong Kong Executive Leader at AECOM. He has been instrumental in landmark infrastructure projects such as the West Kowloon Station of the Express Rail Link and the Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Link Tunnels. As Chairperson of ICE Hong Kong Association, he provides strategic leadership in advancing the profession, fostering dialogue between the industry and the government, and enhancing collaboration with the academia. At HKUST, Dr. Cheuk contributes to teaching and mentoring as an Adjunct Professor, with research interests spanning offshore geotechnics, soil liquefaction, debris mobility modeling, and reclamation and ground treatment.
Prof. Dan Tsang, who also earned his BEng and PhD from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST, was conferred Fellowship of ICE at the event. This honor recognizes his pioneering research in sustainable construction and decarbonization technologies, at the same time exemplifies the Department’s mission to address global challenges through engineering innovation while educating and inspiring future leaders.
Together, the achievements of Dr. Cheuk and Prof. Tsang highlight the enduring impact of the HKUST Civil and Environmental Engineering community in shaping a resilient, sustainable, and future-ready built environment. The Department extends its warmest congratulations to both for their leadership, innovation, and contributions to the advancement of civil engineering.
