CIVL PhD graduate’s research work recognized by Board of Regent, University of Hawaii

Dr. Samir Khanal (PhD, 2002), Associate Professor of Biological Engineering at the University of Hawaii(UH) at Manoa, has received the 2018 Board of Regents’ (BOR) Excellence in Research Award. The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research is awarded by the Board of Regents in recognition of scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students and the community. This is the highest research award selected among faculty members across the UH systems. Normally 2-3 faculty members are selected from all the UH systems and many of them publish in Science, Nature and PNAS. This is the highest award bestows by the university for research works in all areas: engineering, basic sciences, medical, business, law, sociology, language etc. The award was presented at the 2018 UH Manoa Awards Ceremony in Manoa on 27th April, 2018.

Dr. Khanal is an internationally recognized researcher in bioenergy, waste-to-resources andenvironmental biotechnology and has played a critical role in establishing a state-of-the-art research program that interfaces bioenergy with the environment. He has generated more than $3 million in research grants and produced an impressive array of publications including two best-selling books on bioenergy and biotechnology. Dr. Khanal’s research focuses on resource recovery from wastes and residues and anaerobic digestion. He has supervised over 30 graduate students and several postdocs, many of whom have gone on to join the academia worldwide.
