CIVL PG Students Won the Championship in Engineering Case Competition 2016 on Clean Water Treatment

The HKUST Civil and Environmental Engineering team, Li LING, Dapeng ZHANG, Yingying XIANG and Jiajian LIU, supervised by Prof. Chii SHANG, has won the Championship (First Prize) of the Engineering Case Competition 2016 on Clean Water Treatment held in Thailand in January 2016.

The competition aims to design and make an innovative, low cost, and easy-to-operate device to provide local villagers drinking water that meets the World Health Organization Standards from a river mildly polluted by the poultry and mining industry. Within a week time, the team visited the village, analyzed their water qualities, and assembled a device to provide the 300 people village safe drinking water at a much lower cost than many alternatives available on the market. The design of the device was inspired from student projects in CIVL1140, a blended-learning common-core course, in which Prof. SHANG was the instructor and the team members were the teaching assistants. In addition to the device, the team also prepared educational materials for local villagers and provided solutions to upgrade the existing drinking water treatment facility in the village.

Looking forward, the team is ready to modify their device and help more people to gain access to safe drinking water.
