CIVL Alumni, Students Recognized by HKIE (Geotechnical Division)
Our alumni and students received prizes during the annual dinner of the Geotechnical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) on March 9, 2018. The prizes were presented to graduates and students with outstanding performance in geotechnical engineering.
Dr. Dongri Song, who graduated from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering won the Ringo Yu Prize for Best PhD Thesis in Geotechnical Studies. Entitled “Mechanisms of Debris Flow Impact on Rigid and Flexible Barriers”, Dr. Song’s award-winning dissertation work was supervised by Dr. Charles W. W. Ng, CLP Holdings Professor of Sustainability and Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The prize, in honor of Ir. Ringo Yu recognizes the achievements of PhD students in the field of geotechnical engineering. Awardees receive a certificate and HK$ 8,000.
Meanwhile, CIVL postgraduate student, Sze Yu Lau, also under the supervision of Prof. Ng won the AECOM Prize 2017-2018 for Best Final-Year Geotechnical Project which recognizes the achievement of student from local university who have worked on a geotechnical engineering-related final year projects. Mr. Lau’s project, “Effects of Sustainable Biopolymers on Gas Permeability of Compacted Clay”, was co-supervised by Dr. Chao Zhou, Research Assistant Professor of CIVL. Mr. Lau received a certificate and HK$6,000 for the prize.
2017 CIVL graduate (BEng) Wing Tat Li was awarded the AECOM Prize for Best Students of the Year for his final-year project assessing the topographic amplification of seismic ground motion. Wing Tat studied geotechnical electives in his final year, and his FYP was supervised by Prof. Gang Wang of CIVL. Wing Tat received a certificate and an award of HK$5,000.
Wing Tat currently works in the Geotechnical Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) where he explores and experiences different aspects of geotechnical engineering. He expresses his gratitude to Prof. Wang, as well as other HKUST professors kindling the interest in him to study and work in geotechnical engineering.
Congratulations to the prize winners!
