CIVL 25th Anniversary Celebrations

CIVL wraps up an exciting year of 25th anniversary celebrations, and looks beyond for great developments to come.

The Asia-Pacific Forum on Mega Infrastructure and Urban Development Construction (April 29-30, 2016, HKUST) was held in conjunction with our 25th anniversary celebrations, and was co-organized by the HKIE Civil Division, the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (CEEAA).

The forum opened with welcome and opening addresses from the eminent Ir. Hon Chi-keung, Ir. Derrick Leung, Prof. Tony Chan and Ir. C.C. Chan. The agenda of the two days was impressive, featuring a number of keynote addresses and presentations from distinguished scholars and guests, covering advances in infrastructural technology and new developments in projects in the Greater China region, offering an invaluable opportunity to rethink and reassess sustainability, green practices, and other challenges that are facing civil engineers today.

The forum concluded with a day of site visits to the Central–Wanchai Bypass and MTR’s Shatin to Central Link.

Our 25th Anniversary Dinner on April 29, 2016 was attended by CIVL faculty and adjunct professors, advisory board members, VPRG, the Dean of Engineering, and around 400 alumni. Professors Joseph Lee, Tim Cheng, and Hong Lo delivered welcome speeches, expressing gratitude to the tremendous contributions that our alumni have made to the university and society at large. Ir. Prof. Paul Pang presented Outstanding Alumni Awards to Ir. Derrick Leung and Prof. Qiang Meng, and an Outstanding Young Alumni Award was offered to Mr. Terry Tsang.

The joyous occasion was highlighted by new acquaintances and renewed friendships, the distribution of the CIVL 25th Anniversary Booklet, plenty of photo opportunities, and a round of (OK, more than a round of) speed drinking, with teams of alumni and faculty competing with great aplomb and, ahem, capacity.

We have had a wonderful time celebrating both HKUST and CIVL’s 25 years thus far, but there are more events to come: The 25A SENG Alumni Fun Day, which takes place on May 28, will feature sports competitions, an entrepreneurship fair, star lectures, happy hour, and the Alumni Homecoming Celebration Dinner for UG and PG alumni, and faculty (Click here to register); Also, the HKUST 25th Anniversary Celebration Banquet, which takes place on June 19, 2016 in the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, invites all members and alumni of the HKUST family to join in in celebration of the university’s phenomenal 25 years of success.
